INTRODUCTION
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 invites the public to attend a public availability meeting regarding the North 1st Street and Franklin Avenue investigation in Kansas City, Kan. Representatives from EPA and other agencies will be available to respond to community questions and concerns. The meeting will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2009, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Juniper Gardens Community Center, 1980 N. 2nd Street, Kansas City, Kansas.
SITE ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED TO DATE
March 23, 2009
EPA collected samples of material from the site for testing in order to more clearly determine and define any potential environmental hazards that may be posed by material contained at the site. The Unified Government constructed a security fence around the property to keep trespassers out.
April 17, 2009
EPA sampled soils from a community garden near North 1st Street and Franklin Avenue in response to community concern about the possibility of soil contamination in the community vegetable garden. Analysis of the samples showed very low levels of metals and pesticides in the soil. These levels are below concentrations that are considered harmful to health.
April 23, 2009
EPA hosted its first public meeting at the Juniper Gardens Community Center to provide sampling results to the public and respond to questions and concerns about the EPA investigation at the site. At the conclusion of the meeting, EPA committed to host a second public meeting to share additional information that would be developed in the investigation.
June 18, 2009
EPA announced that the second public availability meeting would be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the Juniper Gardens Community Center. Representatives from EPA, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the Kansas City, Kan., Housing Authority; the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan.; and the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry will be available to provide information and respond to questions.
