FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Kansas City, Kan., June 30, 2009) - Representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services will hold a news conference tomorrow morning to discuss their investigation into the use of leather tannery sludge as fertilizer on farms in northwest Missouri.
The agencies have been involved since late April 2009 in a cooperative investigation of the distribution of waste sludge from National Beef Leathers, formerly known as Prime Tanning, in St. Joseph, Mo., to various farms in northwest Missouri for use as fertilizer.
