EPA Encourages Students to Apply for Presidential Youth Awards Deadline only weeks away

(PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 1, 2009) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency wants to recognize students who have developed their own projects at school or in their communities to promote environmental awareness and care.  EPA is accepting applications for its President’s Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) program until Dec. 31, 2009.  Each year, winners of the PEYA award are honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Applications from student groups or individual students in grades K-12 may be submitted by an adult sponsor.  Rules and applications can be viewed or downloaded in printable format from EPA’s PEYA website at: www.epa.gov/peya

Applicants from the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia should apply to EPA’s mid-Atlantic office in Philadelphia. For more information, contact Ellen Lucchetti at (215) 814-3287 or at: lucchetti.ellen@epa.gov

Past projects have included planting trees, building nature trails and preserves, scientific research, protecting endangered species, starting recycling programs, restoring native habitats, creating schoolyard habitats, producing videos and newsletters, and other environmental activities.

The mid-Atlantic regional winner will receive a plaque during an EPA-sponsored awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. next spring.  All student participants will receive a certificate signed by the President honoring them for their efforts to protect human health and the environment.  Learn more about environmental education at: http://www.epa.gov/enviroed/
