EPA grant helps volunteer program

The Wissahickon Restoration Volunteers will use the funding to train group leaders how to educate and work with volunteers from high schools, colleges and other organizations on park restoration projects.
“It’s always inspiring for the EPA when we can help support volunteer programs that teach students and other community members about the importance of restoring and protecting the environment,” said Shawn M. Garvin, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region. “This program fosters stewardship, accountability, and restoration ideals so that the trainees can become lifelong advocates of the environment.”
Since 1992, EPA has provided more than $2 million annually to local organizations and schools nationwide, including about $3.5 million in 2009. These grants have funded education programs of nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
