City and County of Denver receives $45k environmental education grant

Grant supports program to educate students about waste

(Denver, Colo.-August 25, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $45,694 to the City and County of Denver’s Solid Waste Management/Denver Recycles program for an educational program in Denver public schools that will improve student awareness of waste issues and waste diversion.

The project will target 12 schools mostly in lower socio-economic communities where parent and staff support are strong. The focus of the project will be to increase awareness of waste issues through hands-on activities, and to change behaviors that help increase waste diversion. The grant will also assist schools in analyzing their school’s waste streams and current recycling efforts.  

“Environmental Education grants are extremely competitive and this year's grantees represent the best of the best," said Wendy Dew, EPA Region 8 environmental education coordinator. "These are innovative projects that will advance community awareness and shape the next generation of environmental stewards."

Under the 1990 National Environmental Education Act, EPA has the authority to support and create environmental education programs nationwide. Grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations, government agencies, community groups, tribes, schools and universities.
