(New York, NY – November 8, 2011) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Judith A. Enck and Congressman Rush Holt will tour two federal Superfund sites to check on the progress of cleanup work at the Evor Phillips and CPS/Madison Superfund sites in Old Bridge, NJ. Superfund is the name given to the environmental program established to address abandoned hazardous waste sites. It is also the name of the fund established by federal law. Superfund was enacted in the wake of the discovery of toxic waste dumps such as Love Canal in the 1970s. It allows the EPA to clean up such sites and to compel responsible parties to perform cleanups or reimburse the government for EPA-lead cleanups.
