| McCall, Idaho elementary teacher and school win presidential environmental education award

The Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators recognizes and supports teachers who use experiential and environmental opportunities with creativity and community engagement to help students develop a sense of civic responsibility and stewardship.
Ms. Hoffman-Truxel and Barbara Morgan Elementary are recognized for their exceptional work as leaders in environmental education, integrating environmental education into their lessons, and connecting students with their communities and the natural world.
Ms. Hoffman-Truxel is working with four government agencies on an innovative project that teaches her students about invasive species of weeds and the nitrogen cycle. The Knapweed Project has allowed her students to learn about botany, soil characteristics, and land stewardship.
EPA presented the award to Ms. Hoffman-Truxel and to her school, Barbara Morgan Elementary, at a ceremony today in McCall, Idaho. The award includes $2,000 to further her professional development in environmental education and $2,000 to Barbara Morgan Elementary to fund environmental educational activities and programs.
Nationwide, ten other teachers and schools were also recognized with 2013 Presidential Innovation Awards for Environmental Educators.
