Breaking News

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump clashed in their first head-to-head debate of the general election season, and CNN's Reality Check Team put their statements to the test.

One of the most powerful moments came when the conversation focused on the birther debate following Trump's recent acknowledgment that President Barack Obama was born in the US. With Trump standing just a few feet away, Clinton blasted him for perpetuating a "racist lie."

Trump hit back, noting Clinton's tough critiques of Obama during their bitter 2008 primary battle.

"You treated him with terrible disrespect," he said at the debate.

Breaking News

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump shook hands to open their debate at Hofstra University in New York, but the personal jabs and interruptions began quickly.

Clinton said her rival's plans for tax cuts would amount to "trumped up, trickle down" economics. And she jabbed Trump by saying that he had started his real estate business with $14 million from his family.

Trump responded that his father had offered him a "very small loan" to build his business.

"We have to stop our jobs from being stolen from us, we have to stop our companies from leaving the United States," Trump said.

Breaking News

Hours after a coalition airstrike killed Syrian ground forces, the United States relayed its regret to Syria through Russia for the "unintentional loss of life," according to a senior administration official.

It was Russia, a strong ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who notified the US military that coalition aircraft were striking Syrian troops and not ISIS in eastern Syria.

The state-run Sputnik News Agency quoted Russian Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov as saying two F-16s and two A-10s carried out four strikes.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the death toll at 83 soldiers and said at least 120 others were wounded.
