Earth Month Tip of the Day: April 1

Thank you for signing up for our Earth Month Tip of the Day!  Starting today, you will get a text tip (see first one below), a podcast you can play and a link to more information on the subject.  This year is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and we're planning a very special month.  Also see http://www.epa.gov/earthday for local and national events and lots more Earth Day information!

Reduce your carbon footprint! Leaving your car at home twice a week can cut greenhouse gas emissions by 1,600 pounds per year. Save up errands and shopping trips so you need to drive fewer times. If you commute to work, ask if you can work from home at least some days, and you'll reduce air pollution and traffic congestion - and save money.
Play the podcast (MP3, 724KB, runtime 0:44) | Reduce greenhouse gases on the road.

Want more tips? Visit EPA's Earth Day site to learn more about Earth Day, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and what you can do to help protect human health and the environment.  http://www.epa.gov/earthday/tips2.htm

Town of Hurlock Receives EPA Mid-Atlantic Operations and Maintenance Award

PHILADELPHIA (March 31, 2010) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today presented the Town of Hurlock in Dorchester County, Maryland, with an award for excellence in their operation and maintenance of the local wastewater treatment facility.

“This award recognizes operators who are contributing to our clean water goals by running water pollution control facilities efficiently and effectively,” said Shawn M. Garvin, Regional Administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic Region. “EPA applauds the outstanding job that the employees at the Hurlock Wastewater Treatment Plant are doing by treating the town’s wastewater to a high standard that minimizes the impacts to the watershed.”

This regional award honors the staff involved in the day-to-day operations of the facility and recognizes the commitment by local officials to maintaining and protecting their community’s wastewater infrastructure.  It also increases public awareness of wastewater treatment facilities' contribution to clean water.

EPA reviews data and inspects facilities to determine award winners.  Award recipients are selected for their performance in complying with wastewater discharge permits, maintenance management, laboratory practices, personnel training, and public awareness needs.  In 2006, the Hurlock Wastewater Treatment Plant was upgraded to a more advanced biological treatment, to help reduce nutrient pollution.

The Hurlock plant was selected in 2009 for demonstrating outstanding performance in permit compliance, operations and maintenance management, and maintaining a complex treatment process with only three certified operators.

EPA’s mid-Atlantic Region includes Pennsylvania, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Partnerships and Stewardship News Release (Region 2): EPA Signs Sustainability Agreement With New Jersey's Largest Real Estate Developer

EPA Signs Sustainability Agreement With
New Jersey’s Largest Real Estate Developer

Contact (News Media Only): John Senn, (212) 637-3667, senn.john@epa.gov

(New York, N.Y. – March 31, 2010) Hartz Mountain Industries, Inc., New Jersey’s largest real estate development company, has signed an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to cut energy and water use and to take other steps to reduce the environmental impacts of its retail and commercial properties across the state. Buildings are responsible for close to half of the nation’s greenhouse gas pollution. Under the agreement, signed on March 11, Hartz will take steps to promote sustainability in its operations.

“Constructing and operating buildings more sustainably are becoming a standard business practices, and developers like Hartz Mountain are seeing that protecting the environment is also good for their economic bottom line,” said EPA Regional Administrator Judith Enck. “This agreement with Hartz Mountain illustrates EPA’s commitment to help rebuild America’s economy while protecting public health and the environment.”

Under the new agreement EPA and Hartz Mountain Industries, Hartz will:

·         Join EPA’s Energy Star and Waste Wise programs, which respectively provide strategies and tools for minimizing energy use and waste production while increasing recycling rates.

·         Cut water use by utilizing low-flow plumbing fixtures, including low flow toilets, automatic faucet controls, low-flow showerheads and waterless urinals in new construction. Hartz will also follow EPA’s GreenScapes guidelines to minimize water use in landscaping.

·         Maximize recycling and reuse of municipal solid waste, construction waste and debris, and consider the feasibility of composting food waste either on-site or at an off-site location.

·         Follow EPA’s Clean Construction USA program to cooperatively promote and implement measures to reduce emissions from vehicles and other internal combustion engines used in construction and operation of Hartz facilities, with a focus on diesel engine emissions reductions.

·         Implement idling reduction measures in its own fleet, and encourage its service vendors, contractors and staff to do the same.

·         Require that heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment meet EPA Energy Star or similar performance guidelines; ban the use of chlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons for newly purchased air conditioning units; use energy management systems to maximize the operating efficiencies of heating and cooling systems; use energy-saving lighting, including motion-sensitive switches, and fluorescent lighting.

·         Seek the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver, or higher, certification for its headquarters building in Secaucus and its Sheraton Suites project in Weehawken.

·         Meet LEED standards in constructing the Edison Towne Square project in Edison, N.J.

·         Consider solar energy on both its buildings, and on brownfield sites. Hartz already has more than 3.5 megawatts of solar panels installed at its properties, which prevent the equivalent of more than 25 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Hartz will submit a status report to EPA annually, and EPA will use the report to determine the environmental benefits associated with Hartz’s activities.

Over the years, EPA reached has similar agreements with the New York Jets and New York Giants for the New Meadowlands Stadium, the New York Mets for Citi Field stadium, the Destiny USA mall project in Syracuse, N.Y., the real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield, Rutgers University for several of its campuses across New Jersey, Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J., Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J., St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y., Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg, N.J, and Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Grants News Release (Region 9): EPA awards City and County of Honolulu $499,000 grant, two Energy Star building awards

For Immediate Release: March 30, 2010
Contact: Dean Higuchi, 808-541-2711, higuchi.dean@epa.gov

EPA awards City and County of Honolulu $499,000 grant, two Energy Star building awards

HONOLULU – At a ceremony today at Mayor Mufi Hannemann’s office, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld presented the City and County of Honolulu with a $499,000 Climate Showcase Communities grant and two Energy Star building awards for Honolulu Hale and the Fasi Municipal Building.

“EPA’s funding will help Honolulu reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save money.  I congratulate Honolulu’s, residents and businesses for their choice to become less reliant on imported energy,” said Blumenfeld, “EPA and the entire federal family are committed to improving the nation's energy outlook, through projects like Honolulu’s.”

The grant funding will create lasting residential greenhouse gas reductions through community outreach to residents about their energy use, swapping out over 20,000 incandescent bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent and LED bulbs, and develop a Hawaii-specific residential energy audit.  The project will also fund ‘green jobs’ training in conducting an energy audit and weatherization work, and the installation of 300 whole-house, real-time energy monitors. Half of the households receiving a monitor will be given a comprehensive energy audit.

The city will work with Blue Planet Foundation, Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps, Kanu Hawaii and local community residents to reduce residential greenhouse gas emissions by over 4.1 tons per year, provide residential savings of approximately $670,000 per year, and reduce electricity use of 2.7 million kWh per year.

“I’m delighted that the EPA considers our City’s proposal to be one of the most creative and innovative in the country,” Mayor Hannemann said.  “This Climate Showcase Communities Grant will go a long way toward reducing our dependence on foreign oil, which is a key component of our nationally-recognized 21st Century Ahupuaa City Sustainability Plan.”

Honolulu Hale and the Fasi Municipal Building in Honolulu are two of the latest buildings in Hawaii to be designated an Energy Star Building by EPA’s Energy Star Program. The buildings met Energy Star’s requirements for energy performance, thermal comfort, indoor air quality and lighting levels.

“We appreciate the EPA’s recognition of our administration’s energy conservation efforts, said Hannemann. “We work to lead by example.  While Honolulu has the smallest carbon footprint of any major American city, we are constantly striving to improve the impact city facilities have on our environment.”

Energy Star is a government-backed program helping businesses and consumers protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. The Climate Showcase Communities grant program creates replicable models of sustainable community action that generate cost-effective and persistent greenhouse gas reductions while improving the environmental, economic, public health, and social conditions in a community.

For more information on the Energy Star program visit: http://energystar.gov.

EPA News Release (Region 3): Delaware Developer is Tops in Energy Efficiency

Contact: Bonnie Smith, 215-814-5543, smith.bonnie@epa.gov

Delaware Developer is Tops in Energy Efficiency

PHILADELPHIA (March 31, 2010) – In a ceremony today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development presented Milford Housing Development Corporation (MHDC) of Delaware the  ENERGY STAR Excellence in Affordable Housing award for its contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency.

MHDC, one of Delaware’s largest non-profit builders of affordable housing, received the award for the second consecutive year for incorporating energy-efficient appliances or practices at its developments for families and seniors in Kent and Sussex Counties in Delaware.  Since 2009, MHDC has been building homes that are 100 percent ENERGY STAR qualified and implementing energy efficiency measures in redevelopments.

“Here at Manchester Manor, where we are standing today, ten families worked with MHDC to build their homes.  Thanks to the dedication of partners, like Milford Housing Development Corporation, families living in ENERGY STAR qualified homes are saving money on their energy bills while also improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Shawn M. Garvin, EPA Regional Administrator for the mid-Atlantic region.

This year, EPA awarded 17 ENERGY STAR Excellence in Affordable Housing awards nationwide. The award recognizes local governments, non-profits, non-governmental organizations or housing financing agencies that have made exceptional or market-leading contributions toward advancing energy efficiency in affordable housing through the use of ENERGY STAR-qualified products and appliances or ENERGY STAR residential construction guidelines.

"We at MHDC appreciate being recognized by EPA for our commitment to building quality affordable housing with energy savings components that benefit families and their communities now and in the future.  I am so proud of our team and the many partners we collaborate with to make housing better and more energy efficient for all in Delaware,” said MHDC President and CEO, David Moore.

In 2009, more than 5,000 ENERGY STAR qualified homes were built using public funding, including a 30 percent increase in homes built using funds from the federal Community Development Block Grant program.

Eight states, including Delaware, now require all new homes funded with low-income housing tax credits to be ENERGY STAR qualified, and more than 40 state housing finance agencies give preference to projects that include ENERGY STAR products and construction practices.

American consumers and businesses have been saving energy and protecting the environment for more than two decades by partnering with EPA’s ENERGY STAR program. In 2009 alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved nearly $17 billion on their energy bills. To date, 1 million new homes and nearly 9,000 office buildings, schools, hospitals and public buildings have earned the ENERGY STAR. Since 2000, 3 billion ENERGY STAR certified products have been sold.
