EPA grant supports environmental education
project at Ohio County School

(PHILADELPHIA – January 29, 2010) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $11,250 environmental education grant to the Ohio County School in Wheeling,W.Va. to help teach students to become environmental stewards.

Funding will be used to support the school’s Project Green and Growing Well program that is designed to build an awareness of environmental and health issues facing the community.  The project will also focus on educating the general public about these issues in order to make them participants in a greener and healthier community environment.

“Programs like Project Green and Growing Well at the Ohio County School are what our EPA grants are designed for: educating and engaging communities to learn how to take care of their local environments,” said Shawn M. Garvin, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

Since 1992, EPA has provided more than $2.5 million annually to local organizations and schools nationwide including about $3.5 million in 2009.  These grants have funded education programs of nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
