WHAT YOU CAN DO, WHAT YOU CAN USE

Help open up EPA! We're launching a new page by February 5 to meet President Obama's Open Government Directive. Help us write our open government plan, get data we have about the environment, and find our what we're doing to better serve you. The page will be at http://www.epa.gov/open

Test your Home for Radon. Radon gas occurs naturally but is the No. 1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Nearly 50 people a day will die from indoor exposure to radon. Fortunately, this is a health hazard with a simple solution. How do you conduct a test? Most home improvement/hardware stores sell radon test kits. Follow the package directions on placement of the device and where to send it after the test to get your reading.

Enter the Rachel Carson Sense of Wonder contest. Show how the beauty of nature inspires you through poetry, essays, photos or dance. Entries must be from a team of two or more persons, a young person and an older person. The deadline for team entries is June 16, 2010. http://www.epa.gov/aging/resources/thesenseofwonder/index.htm

Baby, It’s Cold Outside. This is the time of year to curl up besides a nice warm fireplace or wood stove. Just remember a correctly used wood-burning appliance should be smoke free. If you see or smell smoke, you may have a problem as smoke can contain particulate matter that is harmful to breathe. Practice the following guidelines to Burn Wise in your appliance: http://www.epa.gov/burnwise/bestburn.html.
Also people get sick or die each year from carbon monoxide or "CO" poisoning. Generator exhaust is toxic. Always put generators outside well away from doors, windows, and vents. CO is deadly, can build up quickly, and linger for hours. Learn how to protect yourself and your family. http://www.epa.gov/naturalevents/snow-ice.html

Polluters beware - EPA is on the job! Check out this cool new interactive map that shows EPA enforcement actions in your home town or state. You choose to view enforcement actions taken for air, water or land violations, zoom in to your town, and pull up the exact fines taken against a facility for polluting. It doesn't pay to pollute!
