EPA Meeting On Tittabawassee AND Saginaw Rivers Site July 19, 7 P.M.

(CHICAGO – July 15, 2010) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 and Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment will hold an update meeting on the Tittabawassee River, Saginaw River and Bay cleanup site at 7 p.m., Monday, July 19, at Saginaw Valley State University, 7400 Bay Road, Saginaw, Curtiss Hall Banquet Rooms B & C.

Following brief presentations, EPA and MDNRE will answer questions about the project. Time will also be provided to meet with staff one-on-one. For the first time since it was organized in November, the Saginaw-Tittabawassee Contamination Community Advisory Group will also make a presentation at the meeting. Prior to its presentation at the 7 p.m. meeting, the CAG will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 5:30 p.m. in Curtiss Hall Seminar Room G. CAG meetings are open to the public and media.

Since signing a Superfund hazardous waste agreement with Dow Chemical in January, EPA and MDNRE have been overseeing the company’s work in three major areas:
• Assessing properties along the rivers for additional early exposure controls.
• Looking at areas in and along the rivers where additional early stabilization of eroding contaminants may be necessary.
• Developing comprehensive cleanup plans for the first Tittabawassee River segment.

Residents with questions or who need special accommodations at the meeting may contact EPA Community Involvement Coordinators Patti Krause, 800-621-8431, Ext. 69506, krause.patricia@epa.gov; or Don de Blasio, 800-621-8431, Ext. 64360, deblasio.don@epa.gov.
