FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., Oct. 22, 2010) - In response to a public request, EPA Region 7 will extend to Tuesday, November 30, 2010, the public comment period on options for cleaning up the Carter Carburetor Superfund Site in St. Louis, Mo. Those options are outlined in an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) report, a public document whose purpose is to identify and evaluate several cleanup options for the site.

The Carter Carburetor Site, a large industrial property at 2800 to 2840 North Spring Street in north St. Louis, is a former gasoline and diesel carburetor manufacturing plant which operated from the 1930s until it closed in 1984. Investigations have found unacceptable levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), trichloroethylene (TCE) and asbestos at the site.

In 1997, ACF Industries, Inc., a former owner of the property, conducted a time-critical removal action to address areas of the site where contamination was most severe. As part of that action, ACF demolished and disposed of three buildings where PCBs were used in manufacturing. Since then, under orders from EPA, the company has prepared the EE/CA report, which identified and evaluated cleanup options for the site, based on three primary criteria: effectiveness, implementability and cost. EPA has completed its review of the report, and is now recommending a series of preferred cleanup alternatives to the public for comment.

Copies of the EE/CA report are available at the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club of America, 2901 N. Grand Boulevard, and at the St. Louis Public Library’s Divoll Branch, 4234 N. Grand Boulevard.
