EPA Announces the Completion of Remedial Activities for the Hudson K-8 School in North Birmingham

(ATLANTA – August 5, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it has completed its review of the voluntary investigation and cleanup report for the Hudson K-8 School submitted by Walter Coke Inc. EPA has determined that the cleanup of contamination was found to be protective of human health and that Walter Coke has completed remedial activities at the Hudson K-8 School.
Walter Coke, Inc. agreed to assist EPA in its evaluation of contamination in soil at the school which is located in the Collegeville community near the Walter Coke facility. The cleanup, conducted by Walter Coke, Inc. and its contractors, took place from March 10, 2011 to June 8, 2011 under a voluntary agreement with EPA. The cleanup consisted of removing 52,000 cubic feet of soil to a depth of 2 feet and replacing it with clean backfill.
