EPA to Hold Public Meeting Regarding Fairfax St. Wood Treater Site, Jacksonville, FL

(ATLANTA – August 22, 2011) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting regarding the Fairfax Street Wood Treater Site, in Jacksonville, Fla., on Thursday, August 25th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the R.V. Daniels Elementary School located at 1951 West 15th Street in Jacksonville, Fla.
Representatives from the EPA will provide information on site background, assessment, cleanup and status of activities at the site. EPA would like to encourage all interested persons to attend.
From 1980 to 2010, Wood Treater, LLC operated a wood treating facility that pressure treated utility poles, pilings, heavy timber items, and plywood lumber products using the wood treating preservative chromated copper arsenate (CCA). Wood was pressure treated with CCA and allowed to drip dry on site. Through the drip-dry process, CCA was deposited onto the ground, causing contaminated soil. Soil contaminants found at the sites include chromium, copper and arsenic.
