Two Washington local governments share $600,000 in latest round of EPA Brownfields funding

 

EPA grants expected to help “breathe new life” into former industrial sites in Washington.

(Seattle – May 24, 2012) Two local governments in Washington will receive $600,000 in EPA Brownfields funding to help breathe new life into contaminated properties and revitalize former industrial sites.

 

EPA Brownfields Grants fund site assessments and site cleanups, supporting local efforts to clean up contamination or otherwise make land useable for housing, community space or commercial development. EPA also provides often cash-strapped communities a much-needed boost to bring abandoned lands back into productive use.

 

WASHINGTON

 

Bremerton Housing Authority, Bremerton, WA - Will receive a $200,000 Cleanup grant for the Bay Vista Landfill to remove methane gas from this site once used as a domestic waste landfill in the 1930s and 1940s. Contact: Mike Brown, 360-616-7160.

City of Kent, WA – Will receive two grants, a $200,000 Community-wide Assessment Grant for Petroleum and a $200,000 Community-wide Assessment Grant for Hazardous substances. The funding will be used to create a Brownfields inventory, perform environmental site assessments, and prepare cleanup plans at select sites. Contact: Ben Wolters, 253-856-5703.
