EPA Adds Three Indiana Sites to Superfund Cleanup List

CONTACT:   Francisco Arcaute   312-886-7613   312-898-2042 Cell   arcaute.francisco@epa.gov FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE   No. 12-OPA064 EPA Adds Three Indiana Sites to Superfund Cleanup List   (December 17, 2013) Chicago -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added three contaminated sites in Indiana to the Superfund National Priorities List: Beck’s Lake, a former automotive and hazardous waste dump in South Bend; the Garden City Ground Water Plume in Garden City; and the Keystone Corridor Ground Water Contamination site in Indianapolis.  Superfund is the federal program used to investigate and remediate uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. "Cleaning up these highly-contaminated sites will improve public health and the environment for the people who live in South Bend, Garden City and Indianapolis,” said Region 5 Administrator Susan Hedman.  “EPA’s Superfund cleanup program will make a visible impact in these communities and spur economic redevelopment.”  Since 1983, EPA has listed 1,694 sites on the National Priorities List.
