EPA reaches agreement with Laminated Products on clean-air violations

(Chicago, Ill. - May 5, 2009) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has reached an agreement with Laminated Products Inc. on alleged clean-air violations at the company's facility at 5718 52nd St., Kenosha, Wis.  EPA assessed a $5,000 penalty.

The agreement resolves EPA allegations that Laminated Products violated federally enforceable state clean-air regulations by using toluene and denatured alcohol as cleanup solvent in its cabinet furniture assembly process that contained excessive amounts of volatile organic compounds.

Volatile organic compounds contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone (smog).  Smog is formed when a mixture of pollutants react on warm, sunny days.  Smog can cause respiratory problems, including coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest pain.  People with asthma, children and the elderly are especially at risk, but these health concerns are important to everyone.
