SAN DIEGO – U.S. – Mexico border environmental achievements in cleaner air, water infrastructure improvements and the removal of millions of abandoned tires are among the highlights of a video sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and Mexico’s environmental ministry SEMARNAT (Secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales), showcasing their successes achieved through the Border 2012 Program.

    The Border 2012 video can be accessed at: http://www.epa.gov/usmexicoborder/features/border-video/

    Among the accomplishments mentioned in the video are:

  • Removal of 3.2 million used tires littering the border;
  • The collection of 93,000 pounds of pesticide waste and training over 27,000 farm workers on safe pesticide use, which greatly improve public health;
  • Benefiting an estimated 6.7 million residents, the U.S. EPA has invested over $500 million in water and waste water infrastructure along the border;
  • Real-time air monitoring web-sites are now available to residents living in San Diego, Tijuana, Imperial Valley, Ciudad Juarez and El Paso.

    The Border 2012 U.S.-Mexico Environmental Program works to protect the environment and public health for ten states on both sides of the 2,000-mile border, including 26 U.S. tribes. Border 2012 seeks to reduce pollution in water, air, and on land, reduce exposure to chemicals from accidental releases and improve environmental stewardship by industry.
