U.S. EPA to hold public meeting on proposed denial of American Samoa wastewater treatment plants' waivers
Meeting to be held on August 6, comments accepted on tentative decisions for Utulei and Tafuna wastewater plants until August 14.

     HONOLULU – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will be holding a public meeting on
August 6, on the proposal to deny renewal of the permit variances exempting the Utulei and Tafuna wastewater treatment plants from full secondary treatment requirements.

The public workshop and hearing are scheduled at the following times and location: 

Date:   Thursday, August 6, 2009
Time:   5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.   Public Workshop
           6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.  Public Hearing

Location:  Tradewinds Hotel, Naumati Room 2
               Ottoville Road
               Pago Pago, Tutuila

MEDIA AVAILABLITY SESSION:
     A media availability session for reporters to interview EPA staff will be held at the Tradewinds Hotel, Naumati Room 2 prior to the start of the public workshop from 4:00-4:30 pm.
 
     The Utulei and Tafuna plants are currently operating under variances from secondary treatment. If the EPA’s proposal becomes final, the plants will be required to upgrade to full secondary treatment.

     The EPA’s tentative decisions are available for public comment through August 14, 2009.  Persons wishing to comment on one or both of the tentative decisions must submit their comments at the public hearing or in writing by the close of the public comment period on August 14, 2009. Comments may be submitted in person or by mail to the attention of Pascal Mues at U.S. EPA, WTR-5, 75 Hawthorne St., San Francisco, CA, 94105, or comments can be submitted by email at:
R9-Tafuna-301h-Comments@epa.gov, for the Tafuna plant. R9-Utulei-301h-Comments@epa.gov, for the Utulei plant.

     At the completion of the public comment period, the EPA will consider all public comments and make final decisions on the variance applications or prepare revised tentative decisions.
