FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., August 27, 2009) - EPA has awarded $485,000 to the Kansas City, Kan., Board of Public Utilities for improvements to existing drinking water distribution pipelines.

EPA Region 7 Acting Regional Administrator William Rice said, “EPA is proud to award these water infrastructure funds, which will help to protect the quality of the drinking water and prolong the life of the existing system.”

Approximately 11,500 feet of water mains will be replaced. The lines to be replaced are old and deteriorating, and have resulted in 136 leaks in the past 10 years. Each leak is a possible source of contamination to enter the drinking water system. The completed project will help protect public health for 361 households.

EPA oversees the protection of water quality and public health. The Agency is working with community leaders and the public to meet the growing needs and demands of our limited water resources. EPA remains committed to developing innovative and sustainable solutions for managing and financing infrastructure with public and private partners.
