“EPA is committed to assuring that the waters relied upon and enjoyed by the people of Iowa are protected by the Clean Water Act,” said Karl Brooks, regional administrator. “Working together, we will enhance and expand environmental protection for the waters of the state.”
Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) submitted new and revised Iowa surface water quality standards to EPA for review and approval, as required by the Clean Water Act (CWA). The state based its recommendations on specific field data gathered by representatives of IDNR in Iowa streams, lakes and rivers.
Designated recreational uses protect water quality for activities such as swimming, fishing and canoeing, and human consumption of aquatic life. Aquatic life uses provide for the protection and maintenance of a healthy environment for fish and other animals.
EPA is working with the public, community leaders, local and state agencies to meet the growing needs and demands on our water resources.
EPA’s August 19, 2010, decision letter provides a more detailed description of EPA’s review, specific list of waters and the basis for this action. The decision letter is available at www.epa.gov/region07/news_events/legal.
