Students in 68 Virginia K-12 Schools are Back Learning with an Energy Star and Energy Savings

PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 24, 2010) – A total of 68 K-12 schools in Virginia have earned the Energy Star building label for superior energy efficiency.

“Increasing energy efficiency is saving school districts 30 percent or more on energy bills each year,” said Shawn M. Garvin, EPA mid-Atlantic regional administrator. “It’s a smart way to save money and help the environment by reducing greenhouse gases. Energy efficient buildings also provide a comfortable and productive learning environment.”

Schools use a variety of ways to reduce their energy use: insulating and sealing air leaks; installing computerized energy management systems; installing new boilers, windows, lighting, ventilation equipment, water conservation and other upgrades; and hiring an energy manager.

Other schools in Virginia can earn the Energy Star building label.  To get your school started with benchmarking its energy use and earning the Energy Star label go to http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=k12_schools.bus_schoolsk12
