FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., Sept. 27, 2010) - EPA has awarded $485,000 to the City of Topeka, Kan., for improvements to its drinking water and sewer systems. The project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2012.

EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks said, “It’s always a pleasure to help provide safe, reliable and affordable water to Kansas communities. These water infrastructure funds will partially fund the construction project which is estimated to cost $3.2 million.”

The purpose of the projects is to extend drinking water and sewer service to Topeka’s new Kanza Fire Commerce Park. This will allow future planned development of the area.

The drinking water project will include approximately 9,500 feet of 18-inch water line, 925 feet of 24-inch water line and four fire hydrants.

The sanitary sewer project will include 3,375 feet of 18-inch sewer pipe, 2,100 feet of 15-inch sewer pipe and13 standard manholes.

EPA oversees the protection of water quality and public health. The Agency is working with community leaders and the public to meet the growing needs and demands of our limited water resources. EPA remains committed to developing innovative and sustainable solutions for managing and financing infrastructure with public and private partners.
