Warning About Illegal Pesticide. If you shop for mothballs, be on the lookout for imported "Fuji Lavender Moth Tablets," which are not registered with EPA and contain para-dichlorobenzene, a toxic chemical. A new shipment of these was recently discovered in New York but it's not known if any reached stores. If you see any, please contact EPA at (732)321-4461.

THIS MONTH IN EPA@40
On December 2, 2010, EPA turned 40! Here are some key events and activities from years past that happened this month:
Dec 2, 1970 - EPA is created on Dec 2, 1970 by President Richard Nixon, consolidating federal efforts into a single agency.
Dec 3, 1970 - William D. Ruckelshaus serves as the first head of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Dec 7, 2009 - Greenhouse gases are found to threaten public health, giving EPA authority to regulate them under the Clean Air Act.
Dec 8, 1973 - EPA issues regulations gradually reducing lead in gasoline.
Dec 9, 1983 - Federal, state and local partners initiate a clean up of the Chesapeake Bay.
Dec 11, 1980 - Congress creates Superfund to hold polluters responsible for cleaning up hazardous waste sites.
Dec 16, 1974 - Congress passes the Safe Drinking Water Act, allowing EPA to ensure the quality of public drinking water.
Dec 19, 1995 - EPA requires municipal waste combustors to reduce toxic emissions by 90 percent from 1990 levels.
Dec 21, 1999 - President Clinton announces tougher tailpipe emissions standards for cars, trucks and other vehicles.
Dec 22, 1975 - Congress establishes fuel economy standards and tailpipe emission standards for cars.
Dec 22, 2008 - A Tennessee plant rupture releases a 1.1 billion gallons of coal ash, spurring EPA to review coal ash sites.
Dec 23, 1982 - EPA discovers dioxin contamination in Times Beach, Missouri. Government and polluters share the cleanup costs.
Dec 31, 1970 - Congress amends the Clean Air Act to set national air quality, auto emission, and anti-pollution standards.
Dec 31, 1971 - EPA begins testing the fuel economy of vehicles - the first steps in informing consumers about their cars' gas mileage.
