EPA Recognizes Maryland School Districts with   

Indoor Air Quality Excellence Awards

 Baltimore County and Fredrick County School Districts Lauded

PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 20, 2011)  Two Maryland public school districts – Fredrick County Public Schools and the Baltimore County School District – received national recognition from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency for enhancing indoor air quality at their schools.

“We commend the management and staff at Baltimore and Fredrick County Public School Districts for achieving these awards,” said EPA’s mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin.  “Their efforts in ensuring healthy indoor air will help improve their students’ well-being, learning and development.”

The two Maryland school districts and other awardees were honored by EPA on Jan. 14, 2011 at a national ceremony in Washington, D.C. 

Fredrick County received EPA’s Tools for Schools National Excellence Award, one of the program’s highest awards earned through a competitive process. This year’s National Excellence Award was presented to five school districts in the U.S. with exemplary indoor air quality programs with exceptional commitment to managing indoor air quality.  

The Baltimore County School District received the Tools for Schools National Model of Sustained Excellence Award for ongoing exceptional commitment and achievement in maintaining healthy educational facilities and institutionalizing comprehensive practices to manage indoor air quality.  To read more about Baltimore County’s commitment to healthy school environments, http://www.epa.gov/iaq/schools/tfsawards2010.html.
