EPA TO HOST OPEN HOUSES ON TEN-MILE DRAIN SUPERFUND SITE IN ST. CLAIR SHORES, MICH.
Chicago (March 25, 2011) --- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold two open houses Thursday, March 31, to update the community on spring field sampling at the Ten-Mile Drain site in St. Clair Shores, Mich.
The open houses will take place from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m. at the St. Clair Shores Public Library, 22500 Eleven Mile Road. Residents will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with local, state and federal environmental and health officials. There will be no formal presentation at either open house.
Soil and sediment in and around an underground storm sewer system in St. Clair Shores are contaminated with PCBs. PCBs also are in canals where the storm sewer discharges into Lake St. Clair. EPA and other agencies have been involved in several cleanups at the Ten-Mile Drain site since PCBs were discovered in 2002. However the area has been re-contaminated and the source of the PCBs has not been found.
The Ten-Mile Drain Site was placed on the Superfund National Priorities List last year. Field sampling work to look for the source of the contamination is set to begin in April.
