Major Passaic River Clean Up Announcement

(New York, N.Y. – Oct. 28, 2011) On Monday, October 31, the U.S. Environmental Protection

Agency along with Senator Robert Menendez, Congressman Bill Pascrell, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Colonel Boule, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin and other dignitaries will make a major announcement about EPA’s work to remove contaminated sediment from the lower Passaic River at the former Diamond Alkali plant in Newark, NJ.

What:                          Remarks, photo and interview opportunities. This is at a secured hazardous waste site. It is recommended that media RSVP for easier site access. Please wear appropriate closed, flat footwear since the location’s ground is uneven and gravel.

                                   

When:                         Monday, October 31, 10:00 a.m.

 

Where:                        Diamond Alkali Superfund site located at 80 Lister Avenue in Newark, NJ. This is in the Ironbound section of Newark, NJ.     

 

Directions:                 From Manhattan: Take Holland Tunnel to Rte. US 1-9 South over the Pulaski Skyway. Take the Right exit off the bridge for Raymond Blvd./Newark. Turn right at the first stop sign onto Lockwood Street.  Take that street to the end, then turn left on to Lister Avenue.  Go approximately 2 blocks. The Diamond Alkali site is on the right. The entrance driveway is to the left of the old Duralac building.
* Directions from 80 Lister Avenue to 117 Blanchard Street (sediment processing facility location):  Make a left out of the site gate and drive approximately 2 blocks to Lockwood Street.  Turn right on Lockwood Street. Go through one light and at the end of the street turn left onto Ferry Street.  At the first light, turn left onto Blanchard Street.  Go 2/10 of a mile.  117 Blanchard Street is on the left across from the Covanta incinerator.  Park inside the fenced area.

 

Note:                           OPTIONAL: Reporters may also travel individually by car to the sediment processing facility located at 117 Blanchard Street (approx. ¼ mile) for photo opportunities of site construction work.
