EPA Meeting on Manganese Health Study on June 24 at Marietta College in Ohio

Chicago (June 17, 2010) – San Francisco State University scientist Rosemarie Bowler will present preliminary results of a study on the effects of airborne manganese at a June 24 meeting at Marietta College, Rickey Science Center, Room 150, 215 Fifth St., Marietta, Ohio. The study was recommended by the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and funded through a grant by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The meeting is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. and will allow time for questions for Dr. Bowler and EPA representatives.

In July 2009, EPA provided a grant to San Francisco State University to conduct a health study of adults exposed to environmental manganese in Marietta. Mount Vernon, Ohio, was chosen as the comparison city because it is demographically similar to Marietta but lacks industrial manganese emissions.

The study is the first in the U.S. to comprehensively evaluate potential effects of residential manganese exposure in adults over a long period of time. About 100 adults in each community between the ages of 30 and 75 were randomly selected to participate in the study.

Following the meeting, a fact sheet about the study will be available at: http://www.epa.gov/reg5oair/news/manganesestudymtg.pdf
