EPA Now Offers Toll-free Spanish Language Hotline for Pesticide Questions
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 34.5 million people speak Spanish in the
“Many people have asked EPA to provide a Spanish language hotline for pesticide questions and EPA has responded,” said EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin “There is definitely a need for this service and it’s another opportunity for EPA to provide needed environmental information to all communities.”
The toll-free number is staffed from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Messages in English and Spanish will instruct callers to leave a voice-mail message for after- hours calls or when bilingual staff are not immediately available. The Hotline Number is 1-888-919-4372.
Although pesticides help to keep our home environment clean and free from pests, they can also be dangerous if they are not used and stored properly and kept out of the reach of children. We are told to read the label and that the label will tell us exactly how to handle a pesticide product safely. But most labels are written in English and that does not help someone who speaks only Spanish or needs some help with reading and understanding English.

La Agencia de Protección Ambiental de los Estados Unidos (“EPA”) Ahora Ofrece Una Línea de Asistencia Gratis En Español Para Preguntas Sobre Pesticidas
Filadelfia (Junio 17, 2010) – La Agencia de Protección Ambiental de los Estados Unidos ha añadido un articulo nuevo para ayudar a los ciudadanos de habla hispana: una linea de asistencia gratis donde usted puede encontrar la respuesta a sus preguntas relacionadas con pesticidas.
Según el Departamento del Censo de los Estados Unidos, 34.5 millones de personas hablan español en los Estados Unidos. De este numero, 57 porciento de las personas entre las edades de 41 a 64 años necesitan ayuda con el inglés.
“Muchas personas le han pedido a la Agencia de Protección Ambiental una linea de emergencia en Español para preguntas de pesticidas y la Agencia de Protección Ambiental a respondido”, dijo el Administrador Regional de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental Shawn M. Garvin “Definitivamente hay una necesidad por este servicio y es otra oportunidad para la Agencia de Protección Ambiental proveer información necesaria para todas las comunidades”.
El personal de la linea de assistencia gratis ofrece sus servicios de Lunes a Viernes desde las 8 a.m. hasta las 4:30 p.m. Mensajes en Inglés y en Español guiarán a las personas que llamen, fuera de horas laborables o cuando el personal bilingüe no se encuentre disponible, a dejar mensajes de voz. El número de la linea de asistencia es 1-888-919-43723.
Aunque los pesticidas ayudan a mantener el ambiente en el hogar limpio y libre de plagas, también pueden ser peligrosos si no se utilizan y se guardan en una forma apropiada y se mantienen lejos del alcance de los niños. Nos han dicho que leamos la etiqueta y que la etiqueta nos dira exactamente como manejar los pesticidas en una forma segura. Pero la mayoria de las etiquetas estan escritas en Inglés y eso no ayuda a alguién que solamente habla Español o que necesita a alguién para que lo ayude a leer y a entender el Inglés.
