Free Open House as EPA’s Ocean Research Vessel Visits Boston on Sunday, June 27

OSV Bold open to public on Sunday, June 27, 11AM – 4PM

(Boston, Mass. – June 18, 2010) – Explore the new Harborwalk in Downtown Boston with a fun and informative tour of EPA’s Ocean Survey Vessel “The Bold,” on Sunday, June 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Boston Fan Pier.

There will be a TOUCH TANK full of sea organisms from New England waters provided by the New England Aquarium. Kids of all ages will be able to see research equipment up close and learn from marine scientists and dive team members about the ship, the specialized equipment and ongoing research projects

The OSV Bold is a converted U.S. Navy 224-foot ocean surveillance ship that is specifically designed to help EPA conduct water sampling and perform data analysis. The vessel is staffed by a team of EPA scientists who conduct surveys with partner research institutions and government agencies in ocean waters off New England and other coastal areas of the U.S. The ship is used to monitor and assess the impacts of pollution and the health of our coastal and ocean waters, and is outfitted with state-of-the art equipment used to collect samples including water and sediments and has onboard laboratories.

In addition to demonstrations of how the oceanographic equipment is used, scientists from partner agencies – Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management, Massachusetts Bays Program and University of Massachusetts Boston Urban Harbors Institute – will present information about recent research from coastal Massachusetts.

The Harborwalk at Boston Fan Pier is located between the Moakley Courthouse and the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA). It is a 10 minute walk from South Station, from the New England Aquarium, the Boston Children’s Museum and the new Greenway.

When:             Sunday June 27, 2010, 11:00 a.m. – 1400 p.m.
