NEWS MEDIA ADVISORY
(Kansas City, Kan., June 18, 2012) - EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks will join officials from St. Louis Clean Cities and JB Marine Service at an event Tuesday to showcase engine replacement and repowering activities that reduce harmful air emissions in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
St. Louis Clean Cities, a non-profit coalition, received EPA Diesel Reduction Act funding through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) to repower four propulsion engines on two tugboats that operate on the Mississippi River within the City of St. Louis. St. Louis Clean Cities will also repower a switch engine locomotive as part of the program.
Large marine engines typically operate in ports that receive disproportionately high amounts of diesel emissions. Repowers are expected to greatly improve fuel economy and significantly cut diesel emissions.
WHO: EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks and St. Louis Clean Cities Executive Director Kevin Hurdler
WHAT: Repowering and metal scrapping of Mississippi River tugboats
WHERE: JB Marine Service, Inc., 4190 Bussen Road, St. Louis, Mo. 63129
WHEN: 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2012
VISUALS: JB Marine Service is located on the Mississippi River just south of Interstate 255. Two engines that have been removed from one of the tugboats will be available for viewing, and a ceremonial scrapping with an acetylene torch will occur. A tugboat with new engines will be on display.
