EPA to Hold Public Meeting Regarding the Red Panther Superfund Site Assessment, Clarksdale, Mississippi

(Atlanta, Ga. – June 22, 2010)  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting on Thursday, June 24, 2010 regarding the Red Panther Superfund site in Clarksdale, Mississippi.  EPA and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality will provide information about the assessment planned for the site. The public meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Clarksdale/Coahoma County Chamber of Commerce, 1540 Desoto Ave., Clarksdale, MS.

 

The 6.5-acre site is located at the intersection of Normandy and Patton Streets, just west of US Highway 49 in Clarksdale. The site is surrounded by commercial/residential property. The facility was owned and operated by the Red Panther Chemical Company. Liquid and dry herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides were formulated at the facility between 1949 and 1996. Previous owners include:  Coahoma Chemical Company; Riverside Chemical Company and MFC Services. The facility is currently used by Coahoma, Inc. as a storage facility for seeds, cotton, and farm chemicals.
